Aquí tienes mi lista de expresiones en inglés favoritas para el trabajo. Dicen por ahí que si lo lees hasta el final hay un regalito esperándote...
1. A tough break
Cuando sucede algo desafortunado e inesperado, podemos decir que ha sido un "duro golpe".
It was a tough break for us when Caroline quit. She was one of our top performers.
2. Ballpark figure/number
A "ballpark figure", una "cifra aproximada", una estimación inexacta.
You've determined what you need and want in a home. Do you have a ballpark figure of what you can afford?
3. By the book
Hacer las cosas "según las normas". Hacer las cosas según la política de la empresa o la ley.
Our company want to do everything correctly and follow the rules. All we do is by the book.
4. Get down to business
To "get down to business" podría entenderse como "al grano", dejar de dar rodeos y empezar a hablar de temas serios relacionados con los negocios.
Let us get down to business and stop making vacuous speeches as was the case in the first part of the debate.
5. Give someone a pat on the back
Dar una palmadita en la espalda a alguien, decirle a alguien que ha hecho un buen trabajo.
We have done a good job. I think we all deserve a pat on the back.
6. Go the extra mile
''Ir más allá" significa hacer más de lo que la gente espera.
I believe that we still can and should go the extra mile to ensure the quality of our service.
7. Hands are tied
Alguien tiene las "manos atadas" si no tiene control sobre una situación.
I am sorry I cannot solve this problem with my company, my hands are tied on this issue.
8. In a nutshell
''En pocas palabras"
In a nutshell, Malaga is a perfect city to establish our headquarters in.
9. Keep one's eye on the ball
''Estar atento", prestar toda la atención a algo y no perder la concentración.
We will get the project done. We just have to keep our eyes on the ball.
10. Learn the ropes
To "learn the ropes" significa ''aprender los fundamentos", aprender lo básico de algo.
Changing industries is not easy, but after a few weeks I'm starting to learn the ropes.
11. Long shot
"Posibilidad remota", algo que tiene muy poca probabilidad de que ocurra.
Building a successful startup is a long shot, but I am loving the experience.
12. On the same page
Si dos personas están "en la misma página", están de están de acuerdo en algo.
It is important that partners are on the same page.
13. Red tape
"Red tape" significa "burocracia", se refiere al exceso de normas, procedimientos y reglamentos que dificultan la realización de algo. Solemos utilizar el término "burocracia" para referirnos a requisitos gubernamentales que crean barreras difíciles y que consumen mucho tiempo para las personas y las empresas.
Starting a company is complex, there is a lot of red tape in the process.
14. Talk someone out of something
Significa convencer a alguien de que no haga algo.
My boss wanted to fire him, but I talked him out of it.
15. The elephant in the room
"El elefante en la habitación" se refiere a un problema obvio o tema controvertido del que nadie quiere hablar.
The team was not comfortable working together, but no one wanted to talk about the elephant in the room.
16. Twist someone's arm
''Dar su brazo a torcer" significa persuadir o convencer a alguien de que haga algo que previamente no quería hacer.
We twisted his arm to accept our offer.
17. Last straw
''La gota que colma el vaso". La última molestia o traición que hace que alguien se rinda, pierda la paciencia o se enfade.
I have been uncomfortable at the company for a long time, but the fact that they did not give me the incentives was the last straw for me.
18. In full swing
Estar "en pleno desarrollo", que ha sido ha comenzado y que está progresando.
The construction of the new version of the app is in full swing.
19. Hit the nail on the head
''Dar en el clavo" significa hacer o decir algo 100% correctamente.
The design is stunning! She really hit the nail on the head.
20. Go through the roof
Si algo está "por las nubes", significa que está aumentando rápidamente.
We saw prices on dairy products going through the roof.
